Now then, Nance… coming to this after catching up on your TUCON presentation. I appreciate you connecting Benjamin and education! I think what’s key in response to algorithmic coercion is something central to your text: grappling with the system and gaining some form of control for ourselves. Within higher ed, there’s such a swirl of competing interests that it makes it difficult to achieve any form of intersubjective emancipation. You fuckers give me hope!
I sold drugs for a while when I was younger. I didn’t see much success, because I liked to do them more than I liked to sell them. It came up in conversation yesterday with Dave @Theory Underground that we might be Hope Dealers. But, not the kind of shitty PMC hope dealers and merchants that occupy so much of the Media spaces, that shit’s been stepped on and cut and mixed with bullshit that will kill you; we got that good good over here. I think it’s funny that not too long ago I was not much more than a suicidal nihilist casting about for something to numb the pain and fighting the urge to just fucking end it all, and now here I am being a part of something that gives other people hope, other people who have been through it themselves and are not easily swayed by these counterfeit merchants who’ve been running the show and shitting on our chests (though some people like that, I guess, and that’s okay I geuss, as long as they don’t try to do it on Main street) and LARPing as fucking revolutionaries. Hope is a helluva thing, it can even be a bit scary, but goddamnit, I’ve been fucking hopeful too, Graham!!!
I think you’re a little too pessimistic, seeing no way to communicate new thoughts, no way out of the monad. It is still possible to conmunicate, but it does require community, like you say, and the communication has to account for and acknowledge the frictions and machinery, i.e., it has to be always dialectical.
I think I’m not pessimistic enough, lol! But, yeah, I hear you, it’s definitely important to talk about the conditions of possibility and take up the respobsibility for ourselves to do the things that need to be done, rather than just crying about some perceived lost something that we blame all our problems on and handwave it all away and be like see, I would do something, but everything is impossible, so I’ll juist do nothing and complain a lot! All is not lost!! (at least not yet)
i left all soc media platforms for a few reasons; one was my attention span was getting wrecked by scrolling,
but another was the frustration of posting a photograph only to have it mangled by the site itself
ironically, a phot based site like instagram would not even allow the original photo to be posted without cropping it!?
i also tried to use the photo option on yt, and they did the same thing.
i noticed also on substack’, i have no control on how the ai? crops the photo, though it is possible to touch it and see the whole thing; it still doesnt display it as it was placed into the presentation, just chops it.
so, ive been using this now for about 10 days and im already upset bc…really whats the point of making a presentation with photos and then having them instantly chopped up within the post? 🤔
yeah dude. Instagram broke my little photographer heart! That’s why the white 4×5 image pad got so popular, so you could upload your original image and maintain its integrity while metting the, simply, retarded instagram format. I have shitloads of photos with a horrible white border around them, it started to become a thing I just did without even thinking about it!!!
... the search engines are so rigged now, that its hard to even call it a democ of expression ..... i can search with the exact words in a title which i know exists, and it cannot be found.....
so, the way some people speak of pleasing the algorithm on yt is also creeepy; they say, leave a comment even if its sheer nonsense, in order to boost my views 😵💫

dude, it’s a dark world we live in. The Almighty Algorithim has us all by the balls
